The Demonstration of the Wavedriver Fast Charge/Drive Train Control System, in Public Transport and Postal Service Applications

Wavedriver is a proprietary combined on-board fast charge/drive train control system for electric vehicles (EVs). It possesses a number of innovatory features in comparison with more conventional systems. The system's on-board fast charge capability providing for 50% state of charge (SOC) replenishment in 30 minutes is particularly significant by virtue of its potential to expand the applications domain of EVs, but without undue demands on expensive fixed charging infra-structure. The Wavedriver system has been developed from its initial prototypical form, through to the present pre-production Gamma system, suitable for application in a variety of vehicle platforms, including delivery vans, commercial vehicles and passenger buses. The paper describes the implementation and subsequent demonstration of Wavedriver in a small fleet of 11.5 m{sup}3 capacity delivery vans. The vehicle demonstrations themselves involve their operation with Merseytravel, the public transport planning and co-ordination organisation for Merseyside, and with Royal Mail, the UK's postal services organisation. The paper describes the demonstration programme, the commissioning of the demonstration vehicles and their introduction into service with both Merseytravel and Royal Mail. The paper presents the performance of the vehicle in routine commercial service. The paper also addresses some aspects of the subsequent commercialisation of the system.
