The Kyushu Regional Development Bureau, Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport, Japan placed the order with Ishikawajima-Harima Heavy Industries Co., Ltd. for the new trailing suction hopper dredger & oil recovery vessel. The vessel was delivered on the end of October 2000, named "KAISHO MARU". She is the largest class suction dredger in Japan and has the capability of oil recovery operations if an oil spill occurs around Japan. The vessel has the forward bridge and machinery space underneath, and 2,000 cu m capacity centrally placed hopper. The drag ladder is provided on the center line of the vessel at the stern. One (1) pair of wide span drag-heads with a recycling system is provided and with an automatic dredging function with fuzzy control assures high dredging efficiency. Two (2) ship side-installed oil recovery equipment devices and two (2) throw-in type oil recovery devices are on board. The latter recovery devices work together with Ⅰ-type steel oil floating booms, that guide the polluted oil to the equipment. Oil recovery holding tanks with a total capacity of 1,500 cu m are located both side of the hopper. The control of dredging, oil recovering, etc. can be done automatically from the wheelhouse. The computer system also constantly monitors the operation and records the condition of the equipment, which helps with the maintenance.
