Radiated Shipboard Noise from a Research Vessel in the Great Lakes

A radiated noise experiment was conducted in June 2016 aboard the R/V Blue Heron, a University National Oceanographic Laboratory System vessel operated out of the University of Minnesota, Duluth. Airborne sound pressure levels around the vessel's manned and unmanned areas were recorded when the ship was underway. Waterborne radiated noise was measured when the ship was operating in stationary observing conditions, both with and without the main engines running. This paper presents results from the radiated noise study and shows the increase in underwater background noise with the ship present. Radiated underwater noise is correlated with vibration measurements of key ship equipment, such as the main engine, transmission, hydraulic pumps, and auxiliary power units. Representative ambient acoustic conditions in Lakes Michigan and Superior are discussed.
