The converged network of voice and data introduces reliability-critical applications to conventional IP networks. Examples of such applications include voice-over-IP (VoIP), messaging, call centers, etc. Voice networks traditionally operate with an availability of 99.999%. Network failure alarm generation is a key enabling technology for round-the-clock network quality assurance. In this paper, we address the challenging problem of monitoring and timely reporting network failure alarms through wireless mobile devices. Our wireless mobile monitoring (WMM) method includes clients and five server components: WAP Gateway (WG), Push Proxy Gateway (PPG), Push Initiator (P1), Content Server (CS) and Fault Monitor (FM). We validated this method on a simulated network and devices. Our experimental results show that our method is effective in providing round-the-clock network monitoring and failure warning to wireless mobile users. The deployment of high-speed packet data mobile networks will enable even more timely notification services and will further improve the user experience with WMM method.
