Significance of International Guideline for the Safety of Computer-based Systems for NPP from Organizational Aspect

The effectiveness of the present practice of introducing digital computers into the safety system of nuclear power plants in both Japan and Korea, has been reviewed referring an international guideline set by IAEA as the common basis for international discussions among the I&C specialists in the both countries as well as a specialist on software reliability. The usefulness of the international guideline was ascertained for conforming "safety culture" among the developers, the regulators and the plant operators, while the necessity of further research efforts was pointed out in the area of software engineering for the developments of the following issues from the standpoint of enhancing software productivity with satisfying the software reliability: (ⅰ)Formal method of software requirement specification, and (ⅱ)Automatic tools for software generation, software V&V/ testing and documentation.
