A novel on-line analysis method is established to trace the whole evolution of sulfur-containing gases during heat treatment of solid materials. The method can be applied in any continuous process, such as pyrolysis and gasification of coal. The setup consists of a flame photometric detector (FPD) directly coupled on-line with a fixed-bed micro-reactor. The method is used to study the release of sulfur-containing gases during pyrolysis of Beisu coal, acid-washed Beisu coal and pyrite. Information about transformation of pyrite and evolution of organic sulfur in coal was obtained. In addition, hydropyrolysis of six coals were studied, the evolution profiles of sulfur-containing gas help to explain some of the catalysis phenomena observed in direct coal liquefaction. It is demonstrated that the method is a feasible and useful tool for studying sulfur evolution mechanism and to provide essential information for desulfurization of coal.
