MgO castables with the MgO-SiO_2 bond system have been investigated with respect to placement and hot properties. Variables were the MgO source and the additive. It was found that set time, flow and hot properties were influenced not only by the MgO source, but also by the additive. The amount of SiO_2, added as microsilica, had an effect mainly on the flow and set, but also on refractoriness. The flowability obtained is necessary for the casting process. The influence of microsilica on refractoriness is negligible at temperatures below approximately 1660 deg C for MgO castables.
