The study of the corrosion mechanisms of the refractory linings has allowed the development and the selection of refractories which are more adequate to the operational conditions. This was translated into an increase in productivity in the Integrated Steel Mills, as a consequence of the availability of the equipment and of the development of the steel producing processes. The development of new technologies as a consequence of the joint effort of University and Company has caused a strong impact over the Brazilian refractories market. It has permitted the companies to elaborate products with higher quality requirements and also allowed the universities involved to better educate the corresponding areas students, turning them better adapted to the needs of the globalized Brazilian iron and steel industry.
