Low carbon MgO-C bricks with low thermal conductivity have been developed, using a new technique that involves pre-coating the MgO aggregate grains with pitch. The peripheral openings that develop around the coarse MgO grains helps to reduce the modulus of elasticity and the thermal conductivity is half that of MgO-C bricks with 20 mass percent graphite. The improved MgO-C bricks were tested in a ladle, which showed good results in reducing the heat loss from the steel shell.
