Magnesia --Chrome refractoies are employed in tuyere zone of Peirce -Smith converter, where the lining is under severe thermochemical attack. In the present work, the effect of basicity of fayalitic slag on corrosion mechanism of Mag -Chrome refractories is reported. The study was based on post - mortem analysis of used bricks taken from tuyere zone as well as setting up crucible type corrosion tests. The chemical effects were studied by phase analysis (XRD) and microstructural studies (SEM/EDX). The investigations clarified that the corrosion mechanism depended on (FeO:SiO_2) ratio. In low basicity level the magnesia grains were being attacked by dissolution mechanisms while at higher bacicity levels the grain boundaries preferentially were washed away. The results are discussed with emphasis on practices in Iranian Sarcheshmeh Copper Complex.
