Diffraction tomography theory describes both the forward and inverse problems in media where electromagnetic radiation propagation must be modeled in terms of its wave nature. In general, this theory assumes media in which the radiation is not attenuated. We have recently extended this theory to light propagation in turbid media. In this paper we present an overview of diffraction tomography for turbid media, a backpropagation algorithm based upon the diffraction tomography problem formulation, limits on spatial resolution improvement using backpropagation, and imaging examples using computer-simulated data.
