The Frame Idea in Semantics and Knowledge Representation

The frame idea has been interpreted very differently in different research fields, and even by different researchers of the same field, e.g. semantics. Whereas semanticists try to build rich and accurate frames whose structures are in most cases highly individual, knowledge representationists prefer smaller frames with a strict structure, ordered into a hierarchical ontology. This paper proposes a frame format for semantic frames that combines their ability to store large amounts of world knowledge in natural language propositions, and the stricter structure of "KR frames", which allow an automatic processing.
