A Method to Judge the Quality of River Feature Databases Based on Terrain Elevation Data

We have proposed a method to compare and judge the quality of linear river feature databases according to the terrain elevation data in the same area. For each original feature line, the present method searches the elevation minimums in the terrain database in the neighborhood of the original feature line. Our approach constructs a new feature line that aligns with the valley of the terrain by using a Gaussian least-square fitting employing these local minimums. Experimental results obtained by using the method are presented and discussed. It is found that the new feature lines generated by using the method presented in this paper have much better alignment with the terrain valley when compared with the original feature lines. The method presented makes it possible to choose the best river feature database that has the best fit to the terrain in a semi-automated procedure. This approach can be applied to both polymesh terrain and triangular irregular network (TIN) terrain databases. The potential approach to construct a revised and corrected river feature database based on the present method is also explored.
