In transactional workflow systems, two cases need to be considered for concurrency control. One is the concurrent execution of intra-workflow and the other is that of inter-workflow. The so-called intra-workflow concurrent execution is the concurrent execution among different instances of the same workflow, while the inter-workflow concurrent execution is the concurrent execution among instances of different workflows. In this paper a new approach is proposed to ensure the concurrent execution correctness of workflows in the two cases. The paper first gives the definitions of task conflicts, conflict classes, shared locking and exclusive locking, then presents a workflow concurrency control mechanism based on these concepts.
