A conical reactor with a dynamic mixer was developed to intensely blend reactor inlet streams, providing expansion volume for the flow as reaction product gas is evolved. Flow visualization studies were used to optimize reactor, impeller, and baffle design. Power and pressure drop were measured versus flow and speed, both ungassed and gassed. Power varies with N{sup}3, increasing with flow rate and decreasing with gas. The studies demonstrated the ability to simulate and process a multi-phase flow; data can be used to directly design a production unit. Process success depends upon assumptions made regarding process chemistry and reaction kinetics.
