The Akashi-Kaikyo Bridge is the world's longest suspension bridge with a center span length of 1,991 m. This bridge is so long that horizontal displacement of the center span is estimated to be 27 m at the design wind speed of 60m/sec. Thus, the wind resistant design was one of the most important themes, it was confirmed that the bridge is aerodynamically stable within the critical wind speed of 78m/sec by wind tunnel tests with a full bridge model. Besides, field measurements have been conducted at the bridge in order to verify the wind resistant design manual of Honshu-Shikoku Bridge Standard as well as to monitor performance of the bridge continuously. This paper presents aerodynamic behaviors of the stiffening-girder and the hanger rope, which were measured in typhoon. Furthermore, it reports the countermeasure that was developed to prevent a pair of hanger ropes from vibrating by strong wind.
