When the new road from Ardal to Sogndal was first considered as a prospective road project, the connection to the north side of the Sognefjord was a special problem that had no obvious solution. Because of its depth, the fjord had to be crossed by ferry, but the steep mountain sides offered no space for a ferry quay. The few areas along the shore, were too small for a ferry quay and the relative remoteness of the area, a godd distance from other human activities, brougt environmental considerations into the equation. The challenge was then to find a place to build a ferry quay able to handle up to 200 vehicles in difficult terrain, and at the same time keep any detrimental impact on the environment to a minimum. This was the background for Mannheller ferry quay.
