Thermal sprayed zinc and aluminium coatings, alone or further coated with paint, the latter known as "duplex systems", have in Europe since about 1920 been used to protect structural steel against corrosion. From 1965 the steel parts for all new Norwegian highway bridges have been metal sprayed in the shops during prefabrication. Economy, preservation of resources, environment protection and performance of the structure during a long service life (100 years, ore more), are key-words here. Protective systems used on existing bridges, and the protective ability and heed for maintenance of these systems, are described. Further, important results of comprehensive research work in the United States of America and in Norway are reported.
