The fact that underground use of space has accelerated over the last couple of years will generally be acknowledged. In particula, bored tunnels have become centre of attention. An important mile stone in Dutch civil engineering just before the new millennium was the official opening of the first bored tunnel in the Netherlands by Prince Willem Alexander on 16 September 1999: The Second Heinenoord Tunnel. The lifespan of the tunnel is designed to be a hundred years, which implies that the tunnel must meet the functions assigned to her for the next hundred years. As for all new and sizeable renovation projects, the Civil Engineering Division of Ministry of Transport, Public Works and Water Management handed the tunnel manager a maintenance and conservation plan at the handing-over of the tunnel. However, this time its motto was: "An innovative project needs to be accompanied by an innovative maintenance and conservation plan." This article will discuss the maintenance and conservation plan of the Second Heinenoord Tunnel.
