Suppression of vortex shedding vibrations at Osteroy suspension bridge

In the design of Norwegian suspension bridges a wedged shaped steel box type of cross section has frequently been chosen for the bridge deck girder. In spite of the wedged shaped cross section this is a fairly bluff flow obstruction rendering some of these bridges susceptible to vortex shedding induced vibrations. Such vibrations have in particular been observed on the Osteroy suspension bridge. Two alternative mitigation devices have been considered in an attempt to quench the problem. The effectiveness of tuned mass dampers has been subject to computational predictions, while wind tunnel studies have been performed to investigate the effectiveness of guide vanes at the outer corners of the box girder. Such guide vanes have now been installed on the Osteroy suspension bridge, and no further vibrations are reported.
