The Lofast project will give the population (25.000) of Lofoten a ferry-free connection to the mainland. Part 1 of the project (21,4 km) is completed. It consists of four tunnels with a total length of 5,8 km. The longest one is rock sub-sea tunnel (3,3 km). Raftsundet bridge is also a part of the project, which is a balanced cantilever bridge. The length of the bridge is 711 m, and a main span of 298 m. At the time of completion, the bridge had the words longest span for this type of bridge. The cost of the project is 471 mill NOK. The initial estimated cost was 502 mill NOK. The construction work has not started at part 2 of the project. The planning/design work has been very time consuming due to the conflict between environmental and road interests. The Norwegian Parliament made a decision in December 1998 about the location of the road alignment. Technical data for part two: Total length 30 km. Total length of tunnels 9,4 km. Two bridges 300 m and 200 m.
