We report a thermoelectrically cooled gated-mode single-photon detector operating at 1550 nm. The obtained quantum efficiency (~11.6%) and the dark count probability (~2×10{sup}(-5)) per gate makes it possible to realize long-distance fiber-Optic quantum cryptography with a small quantum bit-error rate.
