Localized defect modes with high Q in a photonic crystal slab on a low-index dielectric substrate

Localized defect modes in a photonic crystal slab on a SiO{sub}2 substrate have been analyzed by means of the finite-difference time-domain method. A quality factor of 1800 was obtained for a mode with the B{sub}1 spatial symmetry.
