Attentional Requirement for Color Detection

The idea of separating visual information processing into preattentive and attentive has been very influential (Treisman and Gormican 1988). There have been numerous challenges to the idea of preattentive feature processing (e.g., Wolfe, 1998). Although orientation is considered one of the most basic features in visual processing, Joseph et al (1997) found that the detection of orientation is severely impaired by imposing an attentionally demanding rapid serial visual presentation (RSVP) task in the fovea. Based on evidence like this, it was proposed that attention is required for all visual search tasks and almost all conscious visual (Nakayama & Joseph, 1998).
