We depend on the resources of the earth in many ways. At the most basic level, it provides us with Living space, Air, Food, Shelter and Clothing. At a higher level, it gives us raw materials, energy and places to deposit waste products. Over the ages we have exploited these resources, as if they were unlimited. It is now clear that the resources are limited. In the last few decades, the rate of exploitation has increased sharply. We are also confronted with the serious problems of over population, pollution and depletion of resources. Together these are degrading the natural environment and threatens our future well-being and existence. An equilibrium with natural environment is necessary. It will need radical changes in the pattern of economic development and our future life style. The changes will affect many aspects of our life including those involving cement and concrete. There are likely to be major changes in how we make cement? What kinds of cement we make ? How much we make and what we use it for ? These will influence the direction taken by the cement and construction industry in the future. This paper discusses the likely changes in the production of cement and its use in future from the environmental and economical considerations and compulsions.
