Reinforced concrete corbels are becoming a common feature in building construction with the increasing use of precast concrete. Simple design and construction procedures to produce safe and economic corbels are therefore required. Many parameters influence the strength of reinforced concrete corbels including type of loading, shear span-to-depth ratio, strength of concrete, type and quantity of reinforcement, and possibly corbel geometry. Because of these various parameters, corbels tend to fail in several modes. The modes vary from being sudden and catastrophic (such as diagonal splitting and constrained shear) to gradual and more ductile (such as flexure). Different methods are being followed for the design of corbel, namely the Truss analogy method, ACI method, Shear Friction method, BS method, Kriz and Raths method, softened strut and tie model and so on. Most of these methods are based primarily on experimental results of corbels. In this paper, an attempt has been made to study Hagberg's truss analogy, ACI method, Modified shear friction method and Softened strut-and-tie model, taking the experimental results of 59 corbels tested by different investigators. The comparative analysis of the results indicated that the ACI code provisions are more conservative. Truss analogy method predicts values which are safe and less conservative.
