One of the trends in electronics today is large area manufacturing. The driving force is reduction of costs per unit due to high volume manufacturing benefits. Also, the demand exists from costumers that ask for large area devices, such as displays and novel geometries for electronics and low cost carriers. The largest area ever produced by mankind is paper. The manufacturing, converting and ennobling processes of paper are truly large area and reel-to-reel processes. Here, we describe a project focusing on using the converting and ennobling processes of paper in order to introduce electronic functions onto the paper surface. As key active electronic materials we are using organic molecules and polymers. We develop sensor, communication and display devices on paper and main application areas are packaging and paper display applications.
