Air Pollution Issues for Canadian Steelmakers for the Year 2000 and Beyond

The paper will review the Canadian Steel Industry and air pollution issues which will impact Canadian Steelmakers for the Year 2000 and beyond. The paper is based on data and technical information from a report prepared by Environment Canada entitled "Strategic Options for the Management of Toxic Substances from the Steel Manufacturing Sector" prepared by Environment Canada; data from the Canadian Steel Producers Association -Environment Committee; technical and annual reports from Canadian Steelmakers; and discussions with regulatory and industry representatives. The paper will highlight the achievements by Canadian Steelmakers in the 1980's and 1990's in the air pollution field and the challenges that steelmakers face for Year 2000 and beyond.
