Online or in-situ analysis of wear debris in machinery lubricating systems has the potential to provide fault-specific information in a timely manner to support CBM diagnostics and prognosis. This analysis can avoid catastrophic failures and enables improved cost-effective asset-managemnt phiolosphies, especially in the area of timely maintenance and reduction of maintenance indusced failures. Essential to achieving these goals are technologies that can provide reliable early identification of mechanical faults and the degree of machinery performance degradation. The LASERNET FINES instrument delivers a technology that has significant potential in these areas. This instrument determines the type, severity and rate of progression of mechanical faluts by measuring the size distributions.rate of production and the morphological characteristics of debris particles in fluids. Although the system is in advanced development useful information can be gained by in-situ shipboard evaluation of the technology.
