Tomorrow's U.S. Navy and Air Force fixed-and rotary-wing aircraft and surface ships will require imporved use of sensor data and flexible sensor interfaces to achieve cost-effective readiness assessment, in-process condition monitoring, and automated duagnostics, and provide corrective actions. Innovative network topologies that couple higher level supervisory processing with smart sensor technology will be required to interpret and manage information provided by multiplesensors. This paper describes some specific design alternatives for developing cost-effective distributed system architecture solutions for condition-based maintenance (CBM). The paper addresses the key architecture issues of standardization, throughput performance, data management, and cost of implementation.
