The first research on stress corrosion cracking (SCC) was carried out in the late 1800s. However, the first real symposium on this subject-Symposium on Stress-Corrosion Cracking of Metals-was held only in 1944. By that time, SCC was recognized as a serious industrial problem and in 1954 the second major symposium occurred. After that, meetings on SCC became more regular and other meetings were held in 1959 and 1963. It was a time when the seriousness of the SCC problem, the need to identify materials that are sensitive to SCC and environments that facilitate material failure, and the urgency of defining a research agenda become evident. The 1967 Conference at Ohio State University was among the first to focus attention on the fundamental aspects of SCC. At that time, fracture mechanics had become a serious consideration for studying environmental effects on the mechanical properties of materials. The first conference on corrosion fatigue was held in 1971, Hydrogen embrittlement was the main subject for the first time of a major conference in 1973. Since that time, conferences on SCC. corrosion fatigue and hydrogen embrittlement have been held annmually and/or have been topics for special sessions and symposia within major and authoritative international conferences. For 55 years, since the 1944 Symposium, dozens of conferences and symposia have been held. In this apper, the historical aspects and trends in the study of SCC, corrosion fatigue and hydrogen embrittlement as evident in conference proceedings are reviewed.
