Optical interfaces for harsh environments

In most fiber optic connectors the fiber endfaces are polished in a convex shape referred to as PC for physical contact. The convex profile permits the ends of the opposing fibers to actually touch each other in the mated condition. This interface works well in a benign environment, but with equipment in vibration and continual shock the glass interface becomes scratched decreasing optical performance. The fibers must be repolished at periodic intervals.
