MAINSTREAMING ENVIRONMENTALLY RESPONSIBLE DESIGN WITH PUBLIC LIBRARY BUILDING PROJECTS: THE LEED RATING SYSTEM AND THE 1998 LOS ANGELES LIBRARY BOND CONSTRUCTION PROGRAM
A significant aspect of the Los Angeles City Library Bond Program is the adoption of the LEED System for assessing a building's level of sustainability. The paper outlines the structure of a large scale civic program to demonstrate environmental responsibility; specifies the significance of public library projects in mainstreaming sustainability; identifies multiple strategies for meeting program needs with environmental sensitivity; and shows design details of a branch library project. It includes a summary table of LEED criteria adopted for the program, performance data from energy design modeling, and drawings showing architectural features of the case study project.
