WISCONSIN SOLAR DOMESTIC WATER HEATING NEW CONSTRUCTION PILOT

Wisconsin Public Service Corporation (WPSC) received grants from the U.S. Department of Energy and the Wisconsin Department of Administration to test the concept of marketing solar water heating to people building new homes near Brown County, Wisconsin using a green pricing approach and employing existing, conventional building trades. The project included market research to determine and test appropriate marketing messages, development of a marketing plan and promotional materials, evaluation of financial performance, hardware selection, and contractor training, and an independent project evaluation. The project yielded a not surprising but very significant result. Marketing and sales were found to be the major keys to the puzzle of selling solar water heating. The project identified solutions to most other barriers.
