In this paper I present a Figure of Merit (FOM) technique for ranking the effectiveness of glazings for passive solar applications in different regions of the country. I also provide a general overview of the different types of glazings and low emissivity (Low-E) coatings being produced. The paper is a primer on windows, focussed on passive solar applications in moderate to cold climes.
