SUN POWER: KIDS' BOOKS AND SOLAR TOURS

This paper explains how the design and construction of one modest passive solar, energy-efficient house has sparked educational activities and public awareness that has spread internationally in just over a year. It shows how individuals, even newcomers to a community, with a modest budget and minimal time can mount a creative and educational public awareness campaign for energy efficient housing to help share the experience with the community. Merle Niemi Kindred, Business Partner in Garfield Kindred Associates, P.C. Architects and also an educator, decided the marketing component of a State grant received should include two educational objectives: children's books on energy efficient housing strategies and home tours. Both projects were initiated in September of 1998. The books have been distributed worldwide over the last year and there have been four Open House events since the initial tour during the ASES National Tour of Solar Homes in October of 1998.
