SUN, LIGHT, AND AIR: MONITORING THE ENERGY PERFORMANCE OF THE NEW GRONG SCHOOL BUILDING

A new wing of the Grong School and Community Center incorporates innovative low energy features. The new wing, housing the primary school, is one of the case studies of the MEDUCA research program, funded in part by the European Union THERMIE program. The MEDUCA research program focuses on coordinated design, construction, monitoring and evaluation of educational building projects in seven European countries. The projects offer a great potential for using the demonstration buildings as "living examples" in teaching energy-conscious design to a new generation of children. The MEDUCA Norway project incorporates passive solar heating, daylighting, and natural ventilation (Lerum, 1999). The building has been occupied since the fall semester of 1998. A building energy management and monitoring system was installed a few months after the building was completed. The paper will present findings from the analysis of data produced by the monitoring system. Due to insufficient data availability at the time of printing this paper, the findings presented here are limited to the functioning of the most critical elements of the ventilation system design. The actual performance of the building in terms of daylighting, heating, cooling, and ventilation energy will be presented when a full-year data series has been recorded.
