Detroit Edison and Pirelli Cables Systems will install and operate the world's first commercial HTS power cables in a utility network. The cryogenic system shall respond to very high availability expectations and offer a basic technology solution that could be easily enlarged. Linde Kryotechnik AG will supply its cryogenic technology for the refrigeration of the three-phase 120m HTS cable circuit. The refrigeration process is a helium Brayton cycle to sub-cool liquid nitrogen that circulates in the cable cores. This paper describes the basic requirements of the cable system regarding the cryogenic engineering and the evaluation of the refrigeration system.
