Computer-supported process management is gaining attention throughout the industry. With the prevalence of the contemporary process management methodologies, their incapability of adapting to changes and supporting evolution also manifests itself. In the paper, we first discuss some basic issues about adaptive business process management and workflow-based information systems architecture, and then present the workflow language Higher-Order Object Nets (HOON) and a HOON-based approach to adaptive workflow management. The focus is on a HOON-based workflow framework that serves as a basis for systems adaptation and re-configuration. Some of the new develoments of the HOON-based approach are also discussed at the end.
