A new method for rapid measurement of 360 °shapes of objects is proposed for applications in reverse engineering. This method uses a recently developed digital fringe projection technique to capture the 3-D shape of an object. A rotary stage is used to rotate the object so that the full 360 °shape can be measured patch by patch. A merging algorithm is then used to connect the patches together to form the 360 °shape of the object. A calibration technique and an optimization algorithm have also been developed to determine the rotation axis of the rotary stage so that the merging of the patches can be done accurately.
