An automated method is developed which estimates the quality of a proposed electronics design based on the manufacturing processes utilized. The general approach recognizes that each manufacturing operation has the potential to introduce defects into the product. Sample process outcomes are generated from statistical distribution functions describing each process. Design specifications will then determine if the process outcome is successful or defective. This approach can be considered a Monte-Carlo simulation technique. The model is used to evaluate the economic feasibility of additional inspection stages and/or rework of defective parts in conjunction with a previously developed cost model.
