The Superpave asphalt pavement design procedure has focused attention on aggregate particle shape requirements. Multiple Ratio Analysis (MRA) is an improved method for categorizing the various particle shapes found in an aggregate sample. The ability to better define the various particle shapes found within the coarse aggregate particles will lead to improved mix design procedures for performance optimized combined gradations based around particle shapes. MRA analysis may also be used in the production process to optimize crusher performance and to measure product consistency. This paper also features a new digital flat and elongated measuring device that easily and more accurately determines the various coarse aggregate particle shapes found in an aggregate sample.
