The ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code (B&PV) Section III, Subsection NB contains design requirements for cyclic loading conditions to maintain fatigue degradation. ASME design fatigue curves are based on strain-controlled tests of small polished specimens at room temperature in air. More recent fatigue strainvs-life (S-N) data from the United States and Japan show that light water reactor (LWR) environments can have potentially significant detrimental efects on the fatigue resistance of carbon steel, low-alloy steel and austenitic stainless steel. To address the environmental effects on the fatigue life of the materials mentioned above, we used the more recently available fatigue design curves developed by Argonne National Laboratory (ANL) for stainless steel, based on test data for specimens cycled to failure in simulated LWR environmental conditions.
