OPTIMIZING THE SIZE OF THE SUPER-PRISM REACTOR

Based on the success of the previous DOE sponsored Advanced Liquid Metal Reactor (ALMR) program GE has continued to develop and assess the technical viability and economic potential of a modular concept called Super-PRISM (S-PRISM). The S-PRISM design retains all of the key ALMR design features including passive reactor shutdown, passive shutdown heat removal, and passive reactor cavity cooling that were developed under an earlier DOE program. The limitations and advantages associated with the use of a passive shutdown heat removal system, factory fabrication, and geometric optimization of the reactor system are described along with a description of how these factors have led to the selection of a 1,000 MWt rating for each of the reactor modules. A summary of the technical enhancements that have been utilized to make S-PRISM more than competitive with conventional large monolithic power plants is presented. Key features that enhance the competitive potential of S-PRISM are described. They include: Passive safety systems; Factory fabrication of all components and facility modules; Faster construction via semi-parallel construction activities; Accelerated learning through the use of identical component and facility modules; Horizontal seismic isolation for reduced cost and increased margins Reduced containment loads via controlled venting; No scale up required to reach a competitive position.
