The results of some recent very large scale simulations of free-surface flow involving the motion of ships in open channels are presented, as well as an overview of the computational tools and methods used. Automatic mesh generation, mesh multiplication, finite element formulations, parallel computing, and data visualization methods are all required. Some of these tools have been under development for several years, and others are quite recent. The simulations were performed on a 1024 processor CRAY T3E using unstructured meshes on the order of 200 million tetrahedral elements.
