A NOVEL LIGHTWEIGHT AND COMPACT ON-LINE UPS ENGINE-GENERATOR SYSTEM

A novel on-line uninterruptible power supply (UPS) that offers the characteristics of a lightweight and compact UPS engine-generator system is proposed. UPS autonomy of operation is determined by the capacity of its storage battery. High power long-term autonomy of operation is available by adding an automatic-start engine-generator set which feeds the load through the UPS to provide conditioned power to the critical load. As axial-flux permanent magnet machines (AFPM) allow high power density if designed for auxiliary-power engine-generator sets, this paper outlines the solution adopted for the development of a direct-drive AFPM generator including design characteristics and experimental data taken from a 6.8 kW prototype.
