INTERGRANULAR STRAINS IN A DEFORMED AUSTENITIC STAINLESS STEEL

Intergranular strains due to tensile plastic deformation were investigated in a sheet material of austenitic stainless steel. Residual strain distributions in the sheet plane were mapped for a number of crystallographic orientations by neutron diffraction as a function of applied plastic strain. Deformation microstructure was examined by both transmission electron microscopy and electron back scattering pattern techniques. The results showed large residual strains along certain orientations in samples deformed significantly beyond the elastic limit, indicating the existence of intergranular stress induced by the plastic flow. It was also observed that such intergranular strains varied with sample directions as well as the amount of applied plastic deformation. The generation of intergranular strains is discussed based on the deformation microstructure studies and comparison to observations made by other authors.
