Laboratory scale reactors have been used to study the gasification behaviour of a suite of six commercially avaliable coals and three maceral enriched samples. The samples of both coals and macerals differed in their gasification performance and this is attributed to the competing influences of base char reactivity (and its rate of ageing), the deposition of less reactive seondary char and melting of the material during pyrolysis. The relative combustion reactivity of the residual chars exhibited simialr trends in behaviour to that seen in the gasification results. The coals had previously been tested in a pilot scale air blown gasifier and a correlation has been produced getween the performance at the laboratory and alrger scale. Inceasing particle size has been seen to decrease the measured extents of reaction and this is thought to in part accoun for the observed lower conversions is the pilot scale gasifier, compared to that seen in the laboratory scale reactors.
