Comparative Risk Assessment of Energy Sources Used for Electricity Production in Greece

The risks of electricity production from the different energy sources employed in Greece were estimated. Impacts and damages were identified on a marginal basis by considering the incremental burden produced by the examined source, specified with regard to both technology and location. The Damage Function Approach was the basis on which the methodology for assessing impacts and externalities of different power generation systems was based. The conclusions of the paper are that the use of fossil fuels in power generation in Greece, and especially of lignite and oil, is associated with considerable health and environmental impacts, while natural gas causes much less damages to society. On the contrary the external costs calculated for renewable energies range at a significantly lower level. The results were compared to those of other European studies that were performed within the ExternE Project.
