Glucose snesors: current status and further developments

A continuous glucose monitoring system would supply the diabetic patient with all information required to optimise insulin therapy. In the last 30 years numerous attempts have been made to develop glucose sensors and regularly a new major breakthrough has been announced. Recently a glucose electrode received approval by the FDA. Other technologies, e.g. the microdialysis technique, the open tissue microperfusion or transdermal glucose sensors, are also under clinical development. Optical glucose sensors can monitor glucose changes in the skin non-invasively by sending light through the skin. However, no optical sensor so far allows glucose monitoring with sufficient precision. The aim of this article is to review briefly the current developments in the field of glucose sensor.
